Limited Edition Peter Shostak Print
The Canadian Folk Dance Society and the Kryla Ukrainian Dancers, groups in Bonnyville, Alberta that have been involved in the staging of Ukrainian dancing over the last 20 years, commissioned well known Ukrainian artist Peter Shostak to produce a painting that symbolizes the beginnings of staged Ukrainian dance.
Peter Shostak, who grew up in the Bonnyville area, remembers fondly his first experiences with Ukrainian dance - at the local weddings he attended as a youngster. This is the scene he captures in his new work "I will learn to dance like that" - a traditional outdoor wedding in Alberta during the 1950's.
During the unveiling of this new painting in Bonnyville in October 1997, Shostak commented that Ukrainian dance is one of the cornerstones of the Ukrainian culture in Canada. It shows Canadians that the Ukrainian culture is alive and well in this mosaic we call Canada. A total of 300 reproductions of this painting are available for purchase from both of the groups that commissioned the artwork.
